Week 3 Starts July 8th
Welcome back! We are moving right along and once again thank you to everyone for your thoughts, insites, questions and comments as we work though our topics. This week we concentrate on the one everyone has been waiting for…
So far we have been thinking big picture about online spaces, how they impact our identity and how we can use them to connect with one another. But what does it look like when we try to navigate those affordances and limitations of digital identity and networking for education?
Some of the guiding questions are:
- How do different digital spaces shape your teaching and students’ learning?
- What does “the digital” give to teaching and learning and what does it take away?
- How do we create learning communities in online spaces?
- Continue to Converse through Blog Posts and Slack – I think everyone has this down by now.
- Listen to our welcome for this week. Rather than a video we are mixing it up and doing an audio welcome. We had some folks express interest in podcasting so we thought we would try mixing things up a bit? How is this different?
- Read and Listen – We have three pieces of “content” for this week; two readings and one podcast episode, see below
- Social Annotation Wednesday July 10th – all day – If you have never used the online annotation tool Hypothes.is before then you are in for a treat this week as we will be collectively annotating an article by Dave Cormier; and if you are not familiar with Dave Cormier then you are in for a double treat. Dave is a thought leader in education and digital pedagogy who has been invited to present around the globe as well as to consult with administrators and educators about the impact of technology on the future of higher education.
- We are annotating Dave Cormier’s article “Who is going to help build the pro-social web?“. This link will launch a Hypothes.is version of the post – look for the little tool bar on right hand side of the screen. You will need to sign up for a Hypothes.is account to be able to add annotations. You can drop in for annotations any time throughout the week but we are especially encouraging annotations on Wednesday, July 10th to try to focus some of our energy at a particular time. This does not mean you have to be on all day – just pop in throughout the day for a few minutes to check out new annotations and add a few of your own.
- If you are new to Hypothesis I created a little help video with some of the mechanics of how to use the tool and some personal thoughts about how it is beneficial pedagogically (which are not meant to be comprehensive but introductory).
- As a side note for UMD – we are planning a pilot with an integration between Hypothesis and Canvas this next coming year. Autumm is heading up the pilot so if you like Hypothesis and would like to be part of the pilot please let her know. This pilot is part of our *NEW* Teaching and Technology Trial program – Ask Autumm for more details
- Sync Video Conversation Thursday, July 11th at 3pm – Besides annotating Dave’s article we are excited that he will be joining us for a sync conversation. Once again please RSVP using this form.
